Ian Machado Garry already has a name in mind for his road back to the UFC welterweight title: Michael Morales.
Less than a month after falling short against Islam Makhachev at UFC 330, the Irish contender has publicly called for a fight with the undefeated Ecuadorian, describing Morales as the one opponent who makes sense for his next appearance.
There is one important distinction: Garry vs. Morales has not been officially announced or booked by the UFC. For now, this is a callout from Garry rather than a confirmed fight.
Garry Wants the Hard Route Back
Speaking to Eze Talks Sports, Garry argued that beating Morales would immediately put him back in the championship conversation. It is easy to understand the logic.
Garry is coming off a unanimous-decision loss to Makhachev in August, his first UFC title fight. Before that defeat, he had established himself among the division’s elite with wins over names including Carlos Prates and former champion Belal Muhammad.
Instead of asking for a softer rebound fight, Garry is targeting one of the most dangerous unbeaten fighters at 170 pounds.
Morales Has Become a Serious Problem at Welterweight
Michael Morales remains perfect at 19-0 professionally and 7-0 inside the UFC. His recent run has transformed him from an intriguing prospect into a genuine title contender, highlighted by three consecutive first-round finishes over Neil Magny, Gilbert Burns and Sean Brady.
Morales was also selected as the official backup for Makhachev vs. Garry at UFC 330, another sign of where the UFC views him in the welterweight hierarchy.
Stylistically, the matchup is compelling. Both men are unusually tall and long for the division, both prefer to operate at range, and both have the confidence to turn a high-level striking fight into a tactical battle. Morales carries obvious finishing power, while Garry has built much of his success around distance management, movement and disciplined shot selection.
A Fight That Could Clarify the Title Picture
The UFC has not confirmed what comes next for either fighter, so any suggestion that Garry vs. Morales is a title eliminator remains speculation. Still, it would be difficult to ignore the winner.
For Garry, victory over an undefeated contender would quickly repair the damage from his championship loss. For Morales, beating a recent title challenger would arguably be the biggest victory of his career and strengthen an already convincing case for a shot at the belt.
There is also some history between them. Garry and Morales had a tense backstage conversation after UFC 330 following previous comments between the two camps. It never became a full-scale confrontation, but it gives a potential fight more edge than a simple rankings matchup.
Whether the UFC agrees with Garry’s matchmaking remains to be seen. But as far as ambitious rebound fights go, calling for a 19-0 knockout artist is about as direct a route back toward the top as he could choose.
